Fairchild Semiconductor – Smart Power Stage (SPS) Family Modules Offer High Power Density and Efficiency





Fairchild Semiconductor’s Smart Power Stage (SPS) family of modules provides a compact combination of a MOSFET and a gate driver power stage in a single package.

The FDMF58xx parts draw on Fairchild’s DrMOS technology, offering high power density and high efficiency in applications such as synchronous DC/DC buck converters. Occupying a footprint of just 5 x 5mm, the modules are rated for currents up to 60A. Their Dual Cool™ package allows the module to dissipate heat both through the PCB and through its top side.

The parts support switching frequencies up to 2MHz. The driver draws a shutdown current of less than 3µA, providing for low system wide quiescent power.

The modules in the SPS family are highly integrated. Features built-in include thermal monitoring, programmable thermal shutdown, Zero Cross Detect (ZCD) circuitry and catastrophic fault detection.

The ZCD circuitry detects negative inductor current, allowing the module to enter Diode Emulation mode to improve light-load efficiency. Catastrophic fault detection latches off the driver’s output when a high side MOSFET short is detected, protecting the system from damage.

The SPS modules use Fairchild’s high performance PowerTrench® MOSFET technology to reduce ringing, eliminating the need for a snubber circuit in most buck converters.
